BIO

Martha Carolina Guerrero was born in Bogota, Colombia in 1979. She grew up among fabrics in her family-run embroidery handkerchief factory during the 80’s and 90’s; which was one of the most violent periods in Colombia’s history. In 2003, she moved to Miami, Florida. Guerrero completed her AA, Associate in Art Education at Miami Dade College, and her BFA, Bachelor degree of Fine Arts with a minor in Art History at Florida International University.

In 2007, Guerrero began working as an art Teacher for elementary and middle school at Divine Savior Academy. Then, she did an art residency at Found Art, where she developed an art program for special children, and eventually she became the art director.  In 2012, Guerrero in collaboration with FoundArt and Epilepsy Foundation facilitated an art program for adults with epilepsy. Her love for art and dedication to serve others, inspired Guerrero founded Growing with Art Training Center in 2013, where she continue until the present teaching art for all, regular and special need children and adults, and other medical conditions.

In 2016 she was awarded for her contribution toward the cultural Hispanic heritage of City of Doral with her work “La Rebelion del Paraiso”.  In this collection, The Guerrero sees her work process as an act of freedom and protest due to the pyrography that let marks by burning spontaneously appear to representing fragments of memories, learned, and they also goes beyond. The abstract depiction of horses and mules is used by Guerrero to convey a sense of strife and injustice as experienced in the different cultural, political, gender, or economic inequalities that are experienced by so many people (and animals) today. The embroidery is part of Guerrero’s a maternal legacy that glorifies the labor of women and connects her as Latin American female artists.
